The New Dimension of Weight – Parcel carriers have developed a system to ensure they are getting paid properly for the space packages actually take on their trucks and airplanes.  Therefore, items that are light and bulky actually cost more to ship than items that are smaller and denser. Parcel shippers have been charging their customers this way for years on air shipments. It is now being introduced to ground shipments as well. Effective in 2007, UPS Ground, FedEx Ground, DHL, and USPS have announced they will be replacing their current oversize rates with a new rate calculation based on dimensional weight. What is this calculation, how can it affect your total spend in shipping, and how can you avoid absorbing the expenses associated with hidden back charges?
